Virtual celebration planned for Canada Day

The North Okanagan Canada Day Society has found a way to celebrate Canada’s birthday.

The events on July 1 will ensure social distancing, and thanks to a grant from Heritage Canada, the society won’t need additional funding from the City of Vernon to put on a virtual event.

“Everyone loves a good fireworks show” said society president, David Frost “but this year, with so many people and business fighting for survival, it’s just not socially responsible.”

Fireworks will not take place, which typically cost around $25,000. Instead, the society will be working on broadcasting O’Canada at 9 p.m. and encouraging everyone to go outside and bang their pots and pans.

To encourage participation, several contests have been created including a colouring contest and a kids bike/scooter/skateboard decorating contest. Any child who submits a photo of their decorated bike will receive a goodie bag delivered to their door.

Businesses also have a chance to compete. You can order a decorating package from the society and they will drop off a starter pack to get you going. The top five businesses will receive a prize package for their efforts.

For families and individuals, three other contests have been created including decorating your home, vehicle or person(s). Photos can be submitted, or a location for inspection, and the top five of each of these three categories will receive a prize package.
