Jun 14, 2020 | 4:06 PM

A major road upgrade is set to begin Monday, June 15 in downtown Vernon which will cause traffic disruptions.

The area of 32nd Avenue between 33rd and 35th streets (near OK Tire and the Beach Radio/MQN building) is being reconstructed to upgrade services and improve safety.

“The project includes rehabilitation of approximately 285 metres of road, water main, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer replacement,” a city news release said. “The project also includes some sidewalk replacement and upgrades, and a new traffic signal at the 32nd Avenue and 34th Street intersection.”

The $1.95 million upgrade is expected to be done in October.

“Throughout construction, there will be full road closures of sections along 32nd Avenue, which will take place in stages. Detours will be available on 31st Avenue and 35th Avenue,” the release said.

Access to area businesses will remain open to pedestrians.

“Residents are encouraged to continue supporting local businesses. The city reminds road users to obey all traffic control signs and to slow down in work zones. The city appreciates road users’ patience as this project is completed.”
