The number of reported COVID-19 cases are trending downward, according to the province’s top doc.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, reported 10 new cases Tuesday and no new deaths.

There are no new cases in the Interior Health region.

Henry said she is grateful B.C. cases are declining but cautioned that is not the case in many parts of the world, including in regions of the U.S.

“The COVID-19 pandemic around us is far from over,” Henry told a news conference in Victoria. “In British Columbia we continue to have small numbers of cases but across Canada and around the world it is still a major problem.”

She said the novel coronavirus will be in the community for some time and pointed to a resurgence in cases where officials are trying to open up.

Henry and health officials within the World Health Organization held a conference Tuesday where they discussed how to become more efficient at case management and contact tracing.

When asked, Henry said she was disappointed organizers of the recent Black Lives Matter protests in B.C. did not follow her order to limit gathering to no more than 50 people.

“I am disappointed because I know there are very effective ways for small groups of people to demonstrate these important issues and to do it peacefully and to do it safely,” she said. “My colleagues in some states in the U.S. are very concerned that the protests that are happening down there, particularly when there are attempts to shut them down and the use of things like tear gas to disperse crowds, those are things that can provide an environment that would allow this virus to transmit.”
