City wants RCMP feedback on allowing booze in public places

Vernon council will decide later today if it wants to pursue bylaw changes to allow the consumption of liquor in certain public spaces.

Municipalities can designate a public space — such as a park or beach — where alcohol can be consumed, which some say would help local businesses recover from the pandemic.

Vancouver and Penticton have been looking at the change, but the proposal to needs to get more input before Vernon city staff can make a recommendation on it.

Councillor Scott Anderson raised the idea last month and staff was directed to prepare a report on it.

City staff say if council wants to pursue it, input should first be gathered from the RCMP and Interior Health.

Penticton has approved a one month trial of allowing people to drink booze at parks and beaches along the Okanagan Lake waterfront from Power Street to Marina Way Park between noon and 8 p.m.

The trial will last until July 4.

Penticton RCMP raised questions about who would be watching over the designated parks and beaches to ensure safety.
