B.C. Covid update: 34 new cases, plan to reopen economy; foreign farm workers monitored

Apr 29, 2020 | 3:44 PM

British Columbia is getting closer to unveiling plans to reopen the economy.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, said the government will outline more details next week.

“What we are putting in place is the process for providing the information for every sector on what are the parameters you need to have in place in order to safely open.”

Henry said the best practice guidelines are being developed by her, along with public health inspectors, environmental health officers and industry reps.

“We, as the consumers, there is a lot of concern still, and fear, about how this is going to work, and none of us want to see us sliding back to having outbreaks in our community.”

There has been 34 new cases of Covid-19 in British Columbia since Tuesday, bringing the total to 2,087.

That includes one new cases in Interior Health.

1,305 people have fully recovered from Covid-19.

There has been four more deaths, all residents of long term care homes, with that total now at 109.

Dr. Henry said the second death in Interior Health Tuesday was a man in 70’s who had been in hospital for some time and acquired Covid-19 while travelling outside the country.

Henry said over 900 temporary foreign farm workers who have arrived the last few weeks, have been provided with extra support.

“We’ve provided them with medical and social supports and accommodation to be able to effectively quarantine those people. Some of them have finished their quarantine and are now going to our farms across the province,” stated the doctor.

Henry said out of the more 900 workers monitored, four people from four different flights of workers, have tested positive for Covid-19.

Premier John Horgan said today the framework for B.C’s ‘new normal’ approach will be announced next week.

“And on Monday. we’ll be providing our latest modeling plus some details around the epidemiology; who has been affected, where, and how here in British Columbia,” Henry added.
