Death toll reaches 100

Outbreaks cause spike in B.C. COVID cases

British Columbia has seen a big increase in new Covid-19 cases, with 95 since Friday.

That brings the provincial total to 1,948.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, said on Saturday, two specific outbreaks make up most of new cases.

“Part of the reason why we’ve had such a dramatic jump in cases today is due to the community outbreaks we’ve been investigating. Forty (40) cases are related to the outbreak at the Mission federal correctional facility where we’ve done extensive testing the last few days,” said Henry.

At the Mission prison, 106 inmates have tested positive along with 12 staff members.

Sixteen of the new cases are related to an outbreak at the Superior poultry processing plant in the Lower Mainland with 35 total cases at the United poultry processing plant which has closed down.

There are now 11 cases, an increase of one, associated with the Kearl Lake work project near Fort McMurray Alta.

The Interior Health region has two new cases since Friday, now up to 160.

There are two more deaths, bringing the total to 100.

One of those is a woman who Henry said is the first member of a B.C. First Nations community to pass away from Covid.
