Update: Landslide In Shuswap, Road Reopens

Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road landslide

Update 1:45 PM

A geotechnical assessment of the slope where the landslide occurred on Friday April 7, 2017 in the 4400 block of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road is now complete.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is preparing to clear the debris and reopen the road to single lane alternating traffic during daylight hours only. Motorists are advised that minor delays should be expected. The estimated time of reopening is 3:00 PM on Saturday April 8, 2018.

The Evacuation Order remains in effect for four properties located along Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road as a result of the landslide.

Residents seeking information or who may require Emergency Support Services are advised to contact the Emergency Operations Centre directly at 250.833.5927.

Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road landslide update

The Evacuation Order and road closure remain in effect for four properties located along Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road as a result of a landslide on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Further geotechnical investigation of the area will resume today.

The road closure will remain until a detailed risk assessment is complete.

Residents living beyond the landslide area will not be able to travel through the Evacuation Zone at this time and are asked to stay in place until further information becomes available. Members of the public are advised to remain away from the area.

A landslide has occurred in the 4400 Block of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road in Tappen, in Electoral Area C of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

The Shuswap Emergency Program has activated an Emergency Operations Centre in support of the incident.

Early reports indicate two homes have been damaged and additional homes have been evacuated for precautionary measures.

Global News is reporting two people were taken to hospital,  a mother and her 13-year-old son who were living in a rental house at 4467 Sunnybrae-Canoe Point Road.

A geotechnical assessment is being conducted to assess the area for further risk. RCMP, Fire Services, BCAS and MoTI are on scene.

Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road is currently closed from 4459 – 4519 Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road.

Members of the public are advised to please remain away from the area.
