Rise in B.C. COVID cases and outbreaks leads to ‘stay home’ message from officials

British Columbia had a jump in new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, leading to renewed cautions from the provincial health officer.

Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 71 new cases since Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,795.

It’s the largest single day increase since March 28.

The total in Interior Health stayed the same at 153.

The provincial death total increased to 90, with three more fatalities in long term care homes.

There are 1,079 people who have fully recovered from the virus.

Henry said to relax restrictions, there needs to be a decline in new cases and the number of outbreaks.

“Until we clear this hurdle, we can’t begin to make changes,” she said.

There have been three new outbreaks at senior’s homes in Fraser Health.

“One of the most important things we have to do is stay home if we don’t feel well,” continued Henry. “Some may think it’s just the sniffles, or allergies. It makes it really hard to tell if you have COVID-19, but you can still transmit it to others.”

“If you are ill, whether you think it’s a cold, allergies, or if you feel it might be COVID-19, stay home, stay away form others, and immediately contact us and we can help you get tested if that’s appropriate,” Henry stated.

Henry said employers must take measures to make sure all their workers are healthy, and to not penalize workers for staying home.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the government is working hard on ideas to get the economy moving forward, but what has to happen now is people have to stay home when they’re sick.

“This is going to be part of the new reality during this period of pandemic. Sometimes I think there’s a sense that it’s the brave or courageous thing to do, to play hurt, or to work sick. But that can no longer be the case, and that is the responsibility of employers and employees,” said Dix.
