Dancing With the Vernon Stars put on hold

Apr 14, 2020 | 10:55 AM

An annual Vernon fundraising event scheduled for this fall is postponed due to COVID-19 issues.

Dancing with the Vernon Stars 2020 was set for September 25 but the North Okanagan Hospice Society (NOHS) decided to put it on hold until later in the year, or early 2021.

“Given the current economic uncertainty, social distancing and public safety concerns, it would be very challenging to successfully conduct Dancing with the Vernon Stars, and so we are making the responsible decision to postpone the event until later in the fall 2020 or early spring 2021. We hope to have a firmer idea on event timelines by June. We will be updating our supporters on Facebook,” Ruth Edwards, executive director of the society said.

The popular event features local residents working in pairs on dance routines and raising funds for the charity. The dancers and coaches normally work through the spring and summer to fundraise and learn the dance steps.

Edwards said NOHS thanks all of the dance teams, sponsors, suppliers and dance coaches for their enthusiasm in wanting to be part of their marquee fundraiser.

“We appreciate their support, cooperation and patience as we made this very difficult decision,” she said.

The NOHS is a registered charity that operates a 12-bed palliative care facility in Vernon for residents of the North Okanagan.
