Who Will Run the Rail Trail?

Apr 7, 2017 | 10:00 AM

The president of Tourism-Lake Country is urging local government to consider forming a not for profit society to oversee the Okanagan Rail Trail.

Alan Gatzke — a farmer and business owner in Oyama who visited a successful rail trail in New Zealand — told the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee the name and logo should also be secured.

GVAC Director Catherine Lord says they have to look at how the trail will be used.

“We have to decide on if we actually want the trail to be used as a tourist attraction, which I think is the general feeling overall, or is it just going to be a raw trail?”

Lord says they will need policies to guide the trail, which she feels a committee of local politicians could be in charge of.

“There are a lot of different options, and I think that’s what we need to look at, and then come to some resolution of what would be the best option for this trail, and what would be the name of it,” Lord tells kiss FM.

Gatzke suggested the Okanagan Valley Rail Trail for the name, which is different from the Okanagan Rail Trail, as it’s been referred to in Greater Vernon.
