Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Saturday, B.C. has taken similar measures to what others are calling a lockdown.

“We’ve tried to do it in a thoughtful and purposeful way, rather than having blanket restrictions on certain things.”

She said one example of that is how B.C. closed in-classroom schooling but still allowed supports for essential workers such as child care.

Henry said cases continue to increase, but she is confident the current measures will prevent transmissions to the next generation.

“But any severe outbreak, or cluster of cases, is going to tip the scales for us, and we are at that very critical point where we need to continue this action together. We must stay apart with our physical distancing. We must stay home if we are ill. We must be united united in this and 100 per cent committed until we flatten this curve for good,” stated Henry.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said there are 4,295 hospital beds currently vacant around B.C.

“Which continues the work to prepare the health care system for what we expect to be more cases in the coming weeks,” he said.

Dix said 28 retired doctors and 309 nurses have re-registered in B.C. to help out during the crisis.

444 of the cases are in Vancouver Coastal Health

291 in Fraser Health

77 in Interior Health (up from 70 on Friday)

60 in Vancouver Island Health

12 in Northern Health

81 people are in hospital and 52 are in intensive care with Covid 19
