Champions crowned at B.C. Senior championships in Vernon

Vernon will hold a special memory for two B.C. curling champions.

Donna Mychaluk’s team from New Westminster and Parksville won the senior women’s 2020 provincial championship Sunday with a nail-biting 6-5 win over Penny Shantz’s team from Parksville, Nanaimo and Courtenay at the Vernon Curling Club.

Victoria Murphy, Shirley Wong and Janet Suter rounded out the winning foursome.

Wes Craig’s team, 2020 men’s champion (Curl BC)

The rink from Nanaimo/Kerry Park skipped by Wes Craig captured the 2020 men’s title with a 7-1 victory over Steve Wright of Kelowna/Comox Valley.

Other team member are Steve Waatainen, Keith Clarke and Craig Burton.

The six-day competition featured the top 50+ teams in the province.

The winning teams will travel to the Everest Canadian Seniors from Mar. 16-22 at the Portage Curling Club in Portage la Prairie, Man.

Feb. 21

The round robin is complete and now the playoffs begin at the 2020 B.C. Senior Curling Championships at the Vernon Curling Club.

Donna Mychaluk’s team from Royal City and Parksville won the bye to the women’s final on Sunday. The team will face either Team Shantz or Team Richter, who face off in the semi finals Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Shantz team from Parksville/Nanaimo/Comox Valley features skip Penny Shantz who won a gold medal at the 1988 Calgary Olympics when curling was a demonstration sport.

On the men’s side, Wes Craig’s squad from Nanaimo and Kerry Park has won a bye to the final on Sunday. The team will face either Team Wright or Team Pierce, who will also face off in semi finals happening Saturday at 2 p.m.

Former Canadian and world champions Brent Pierce and Bryan Miki are part of the Pierce team representing Royal City. Pierce and Miki were both on the B.C.-based McAulay rink that won the Brier and world championship in 2000.
