Update: Road Drops Two Feet

Transportation staff and engineers have been assessing a section of Mabel Lake Road that has seen one side of it drop two feet.

It’s affecting a 50 metre section of road, about 20 km east of Enderby.

Danny Morris, operations manager for the Ministry of Transportation, says it’s a natural occurrence, that has happened before.

“It’s caused by all the moisture. The part that has dropped two feet, so I’ve been told through the history, it’s already been fixed three times.”

Morris says the repairs could start later this week.

“It could be expensive depending on what they come up with, but if it drops two feet, you’ve got to come u with something.”

The road in the affected area is down to single lane alternating, with 24 hour traffic control.

Officials are assessing the site of some sinking ground on Mabel Lake Road, 20 kilometres from Enderby.

Holly Hubley with Frontline Traffic Control says a large crack on one side of the road grew a bit on Monday.

“They had a little bit of a shift yesterday, and when they went to check it out, it sunk a bit more, so right now, it is open to single lane alternating traffic,” Hubley tells Kiss FM.

The Transportation Ministry and Geo-technical engineers are evaluating what to do, and should know more later today.
