Curlers come to town for provincials

Vernon’s economy will get a bit of a boost with the city hosting a provincial championship.

The B.C. Senior Curling Championship hits the ice at the Vernon Curling Club today until Sunday.

The event features competitors 50 and older, with eight men’s teams, and seven women’s teams.

The local favourite will be Mark Longworth’s rink from Vernon and Winfield with Dean Mackney at third, Greg Hamilton at second and Ron McDougall at lead.

There is also three men’s teams partly from Kelowna, and Marilou Richter’s women’s team from Penticton and Kelowna.

Former Canadian and world champion team members Brent Pierce and Bryan Miki (McAuley 2000) from Royal City Curling Club are also in the men’s field.

The winning teams will advance to the Everest Canadian Seniors from Mar. 16-22 at the Portage Curling Club in Portage la Prairie, Man.
