Road Lines On ‘To Do’ List

It’s been a difficult year for line markings on local roads.

Most are faded, while others are barely visible, which can be dangerous in some areas.

The city plans to repaint them this spring, starting in May.

The city says it has to wait until the conditions are dry and warm enough, similar to the situation with potholes.

Communications coordinator Tanya Laing-Gahr says the paint used on the roads doesn’t withstand winter conditions as well as in previous years.

She says the paint is federally regulated and more environmentally-friendly.

That has led to an industry-wide shift away from oil-based paints to latex-based paints, resulting in reduced durability.

“The City of Vernon understands residents’ concerns with road conditions and wishes to reassure citizens that repairing and maintaining our streets is a top priority,” says a City news release. “Staff continue to explore new products and more efficient procedures that increase the longevity of road marking, repairs and overall road maintenance at a sustainable cost.”
