Have you got the January weather blahs?

Jan 8, 2020 | 5:15 AM

Weather experts say this is typical weather for January — but it doesn’t give us much to look forward to in the near future.

Doug Lundquist from Environment Canada says Thursday is expected to sunny, but it will be brief, with another storm moving in that night and continuing Friday and Saturday, possibly bringing 10 to 25 centimetres of snow.

“It is mid-winter right? Jan. 15 is about the coldest day of the year, the middle of winter. We count winter from Dec. 1 to the end of February. This is the weather you would expect for this time of year,” said Lundquist, a meteorologist based in Kelowna.

After the next storm, it’s going to get colder, with an Arctic front bringing frigid temperatures by Sunday.

“We should start to see temperatures getting into the minus double-digits, and only recovering into the mid-single digits, negative. It’s not a major Arctic outbreak, but it definitely is an Arctic front,” Lundquist added.

Lundquist says snowfall amounts have had wide variations in Kelowna and other areas the last while.

“There are three things (factors). The lake warms us up and melts the snow, the heat island effect of the city and the elevation. Those three things make less snow in Kelowna near the [Okanagan] lake. And it’s the same in Vernon.”

On Tuesday, show estimates for Kelowna were 7 centimetres while areas in West Kelowna received 27 centimetres.
