‘He’s basically out:’ Advocate calling for change after Sagmoen sentence

A women’s advocate is calling for stricter justice after the sentencing of 39-year-old Curtis Sagmoen.

B.C Supreme Court Justice Alison Beames sentenced Sagmoen to time served plus 36 months probation in BC Supreme Court in Vernon on Friday.

Following the sentence, victims advocate Jody Leon argued the Canadian justice system needs to do more to protect female victims of crime.

“I think they need to speed the process up for women to have specialized courts for victims of violence so there are no delays. There should be no time and a half that reduces a person’s sentence,” she said.

Leon and several others took to the courthouse steps as an act of protest during the trial to call for justice.

Sagmoen was found guilty on three counts: disguising his face with intent to commit an offence, for using a firearm while committing an indictable offence, and for possession of a controlled substance.

As part of his three-year probation order Sagmoen is bound to several conditions, including no contact or communication with sex trade workers and the victim. A ten-year firearms prohibition order also stands.

Conditions that limit Sagmoen’s electronic communications were also imposed. Sagmoen is not to possess any device capable of accessing the internet unless it can display past internet history and is inspected by a probation officer. Th order prohibits him from possessing or using a mobile phone unless it is being used to contact a lawyer, probation officer or in the case of an emergency. Monthly cell phone bills with details of text exchanges are also required as part of probation.

Sagmoen is expected to appear in court in February for an unrelated assault charge.
