The end is in sight for Vernon ultra athlete Shanda Hill — but it’s not getting any easier.

As of this morning, Hill had 260 kilometres left in her 844 k run at the Double Deca in Mexico, the world’s toughest triathlon.

Hill continues to endure despite a case of food poisoning and an exposed nerve ending in one of her toes.

“I can’t imagine how painful each step must be. Laura Knobloch from Colorado is currently 34 km ahead of Shanda, but as we know, things could change quickly! Should make for a very exciting finish to the race,” said a posting on Shanda’s Facebook page.

Hill is in fifth place overall among the ten competitors, and is trying to become the first Canadian to finish the gruelling event.

The 37-year-old is still confident she will be able to finish in the 28-day period, meaning by this coming Saturday.

Earlier parts of the triathlon in Leon Mexico were a 76 km swim and a 3,600 bike ride.
