$5,800 for two cans?

Council approves garbage cans costing thousands near Wholesale Club

In an effort to beautify the neighborhood near the Wholesale Club, Vernon city council voted to install two garbage cans along 28th Avenue and 33rd Street.

The price tag for the two garbage cans will be $5,800.

The operational costs for the cans will cost an additional $1,090 per year and will be funded through the unexpended uncommitted year- end balance fund.

Coun. Scott Anderson stated at Monday’s council meeting the price of the two cans seemed a little hefty.

“Five thousand eight hundred dollars seems a little heavy for a tin can, or two,” he said.

“Can we anticipate that if other garbage can locations are pinpointed that economies of scale will bring that figure down?” Anderson asked city staff.

But staff said purchasing more cans and using economies of scale likely won’t work to bring the cost of the cans down. Staff suggested choosing the same type of garbage cans used in the downtown core to maintain aesthetic cohesion.
