Update: Report On Court House Due This Week

An inspection into the state of the Vernon courthouse building is taking longer than first thought.

A structural engineer was hired last week to evaluate the 105 year old building, with the results of that, now expected later this week.

“The structural engineer asked for more time to complete the assessment. We’re expecting the results on Wednesday,” says Liam Butler, Public Affairs Officer, Ministry of Attorney General in an email to Beach Radio News.

A faulty air conditioner led to water leaking into several rooms last month, and also caused issues with mould and crumbling concrete.

Two courtrooms remain closed off, but Butler says it hasn’t been an issue.

Provincial government officials are still waiting for results of a structural assessment at the Vernon courthouse.

A faulty air conditioner caused some water damage to several rooms last month, and also led to issues with mould and crumbling cement.

Liam Butler with the Attorney General’s Ministry tells Beach Radio News, an engineer has inspected the more than 100 year old facility, and they should know the results soon.

Two courtrooms are closed off, but Butler says so far they have not experienced any delays.

Faulty equipment is believed to be the cause of two courtrooms being closed-off to the public at the Vernon Law Courts.

A malfunctioning air conditioner caused water to spill into a conference room on the second floor and into the sherriff’s office below.

That also led to mould being discovered under the floor, and concerns of crumbling concrete.

The damage and repairs are being assessed , and officials don’t expect the closures to cause court delays.
