Vernon aquatic center sees record amount of users

Apr 24, 2019 | 12:02 AM

If you have gone swimming at the Vernon Aquatic Center lately consider yourself one of the many.

Vernon Recreation says more people have been using the pool than ever before, so much so that they have been experiencing a “record high” in the number of drop ins to the facility.

According to Vernon Recreation’s first annual quarterly report to council, the aquatic center saw 45,240 people drop in to use the pool from January 2019- March 31 2019.

Staff says that works out to about 500 visits to the pool per day.

The facility currently offers about 90 hours of drop in swim times each week.

Aside from drop in swimming, lessons teaching water safety and swimming lessons continue to be the most popular programs offered at the pool.

“Our staff are dedicated to preventing drowning deaths in our local lakes, rivers, and streams by teaching water safe behaviors to all of our children in our community,” said Doug Ross, Manager of Recreation Services.

The report states that the pool had 1,411 people registered to take classes in the first quarter.

Aquafit classes also continue to be popular with 2827 people taking classes from January to March.

The aquatic center provides 15 classes per week of Aquafit to the community.

Community sponsored public swims also provided the pool a boost in visitors.

The Jopo swim saw 414 people use the pool and the free family swim on Feb. 18, 2019 saw 565 people use the facility.

Vernon Recreation says the report indicates the importance of recreation as “a justified and essential public service,” to residents.
