Controlled Vernon Burn Postponed

The wet weather has forced fire crews to put-off a prescribed burn of 10 acres of city owned land in Vernon’s Foothills areas.

Fire Chief Dave Lind says they were hoping to burn-off fire fuels this month, but it’s now too green, and the conditions would not achieve the desired effect.

However Lind says there has been some benefits as team members went door to door with information for residents, and held a public meeting.

Crews also did site prep to thin the brush, remove garbage and tree branches, and work on a fire guard.

“This thinning will reduce under growth and help trees and brush better resist fire,” says Lind. “Additional site prep will continue and a burn will take place in the fall or next spring, as conditions permit.”

The burn was a combined project with fire crews from Vernon, BX-Swan Lake and the BC Wildfire Service.

“Prescribed burning is an important tool in managing fuel loads in the Wildland Urban Interface. In the absence of fire, wildlands become over grown and unhealthy. Fires that do occur in untreated lands during extreme hazard conditions can result in fast moving and hot fires which damage the ecosystem and present serious risks to our community,” says Lind.
