Mayor touts recreation, vibrant downtown to business community

Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming addressed business leaders today and gave an update on the state of the local marketplace.

Cumming highlighted the city’s main priorities which includes investing in recreation, supporting more affordable housing and creating a vibrant downtown.

Cumming also said that the city has been focused on “fixing stuff.”

“This is a reality. Vernon has very old infrastructure and you are going to see this go on for the full four years of the term,” he said.

A large portion of the improvements will take place this year, according to the mayor.

“We are spending about $22 million on fixing stuff and we are going to spend another $12 million on setting up a dedicated line from the brewery to the sewage plant.”

The Rail Trail also received some attention with the mayor stating that thousands of people have hit the trail since it opened.

“Last year it was sort of open, no marketing, no encouragement to use it, the Kelowna part wasn’t open, (and there was) 420,000 uses on the north part of the trail .”

“So this link through the City of Vernon is absolutely critical in terms of economic impact,” he said.

About 80 business leaders attended the event which was put on by RBC.
