One Year Later: Still Humboldt Strong

A memorial service will be held in Humboldt today to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.

The Humboldt Broncos’ bus crashed into a semi-trailer while the team was en route to Nipawin for Game 5 of its SJHL semifinal series.

Police confirmed that a 16th person died after the Friday night collision. The team’s athletic trainer, 24-year-old Dayna Broncos, died from the injuries she sustained in the collision.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the victims and their families starting off with $1 million collected within 18 hours of the fund being started and closing with $15 million raised, making it the largest GoFundMe campaign in Canada’s history.

The survivors of the Humboldt Broncos and Christina Haugan, who was married to victim and former head coach Darcy Haugan, were honoured at the NHL’s awards night in Las Vegas accepting the Willie O’Ree Community Hero award on behalf of the former head coach.

The Stanley Cup made an appearance in Humboldt thanks to Saskatoon-born Washington Capitals player Chandler Stephenson.

The devastation hit home not only with hockey-loving Canadians, but inspired people around the world to proudly stand hockey sticks on their front porches in solidarity with the Humboldt community.

The team’s Pastor will lead today’s memorial service at the Elgar Petersen Arena, where yellow banners with the names of all 29 people on the bus hang above the main entrance.

It will include a moment of silence at 4;50 p.m. — the exact time a semi blew through a stop sign and plowed into the bus, killing 16 people aboard and injuring 13 others.
