City Launches Organics Collection Program
The City of Vernon is trying-out an organics program to cut down on the waste going into the landfill.
“Organics diversion through composting can reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by over 90% compared to sending the same waste to the landfill,” says a City news release.
Organics collection bins have been set-up in the parking lot near City Hall by the Community Services Building, and behind the Schubert Centre where people can drop-off organic materials such as food scraps, paper, leaves and garden trimmings.
“Schubert Centre is an ideal location to try out waste diversion,” says Mayor Victor Cumming. “The combination of housing density and the Centre’s catering and meal services could potentially provide a viable organic waste diversion pilot.”
