School District Starts Bus Pass System

The Vernon School District is rolling out a new pass system for all students who use school buses.

Students who are registered bus riders will receive their pass this week, and will have to show it to the bus driver each time they get on the bus starting next Monday.

“Elementary school students will have received their pass in the bus line ups after school, and high school students should have picked up their pass at their school office or designated school location,” says a District 22 news release.

The District’s Transportation Manager, Robyn Stephenson, says the change is being made for several reasons.

“School District 22 is required to maintain a rider manifest for each bus run. Implementing bus passes within the district is a step towards improving student safety and ensuring students are riding the correct bus,” says Stephenson. “Bus passes will also assist school staff as they help students get on the correct bus and to the correct destination.”

A two-week grace period will be in place until April 18, to allow all students requiring busing time to register and for the bus passes to be issued.

After that, students who try to get on a bus without a pass, their parents will be contacted to confirm if busing is required.

“All bus riders are required to register to ride the bus,” says Stephenson. “This will provide us with accurate ridership numbers and allow us to ensure we are providing the appropriate level of service for the number of riders we have registered.”
