Businesses seeing the effects of 28th avenue construction

Apr 2, 2019 | 5:41 PM

Some businesses along 28th avenue say they’ve experienced quite a dip in foot traffic since construction on their street began a week and a half ago.

” It’s definitely been fairly crazy, I would say the biggest thing is the parking that everyone has noticed that they are having to kind of park somewhere else and work their way through the maze to get here ,” said business manager Nikita Coles .

Noise has also been rampant in the area, according to some, with crews busy digging up the old pipes.

“My whole building shakes,” said resident David Russell.

All of these factors, along with the challenge of getting around has had an impact on some of their bottom lines, according to the businesses.

One business who requested to remain anonymous said that their business has dropped by 50 percent, since construction started and another business said that they have had to put on specials in order to draw people in .

” It’s difficult to say because we just opened our patio this week so we kind of noticed that we’ve been status quo and the weather has been really nice so that is always increasing business for a liquor store and a patio,” said Tammy Dar of the Sir Winston’s Pub and Liquor store.

She admits that her business has been ” Very lucky,” and she remains very thankful for the people that continue to come out and support them.

” It is noisy, it is messy, and it is hard to get in but like I said they are doing their best to accommodate us, I understand that it is not going to be perfect for everybody, and like I said I appreciate that our customers are super loyal and finding a way to get here somehow”.

The city of Vernon says work is being done to replace aging sewer and water lines.

A new storm drain will also be added.

The work is expected to wrap up in June, according to the city.
