‘This money just doesn’t come out of thin air’: City Councillor stresses fiscal responsibility
Akbal Mund spoke out during Monday’s city council meeting and said that council needs to think about the taxpayer before they put forward motions.
” This money just doesn’t come out of thin air, so lets be very prudent when we are sitting here making motions and making decisions that we are thinking about where are we going to get this money from, I’m sure if we ask administration where this money is coming from, they are probably just squirming right now.”
Mund spoke out after council put forward motions to consider putting a new playground in Marshall Fields and to look into hiring an additional person for geese control in city parks and beaches.
He stressed that for the past two years in a row the city has imposed tax increases, and that’s something that council needs to remember before making decisions.
” We just can’t keep doing this because it is not being true to our taxpayer,” said Mund.
He added that council has only been sitting their chairs for a few months and he is worried about what will happen to the city’s finances for the rest of the term if council doesn’t start tightening their belts.
” I fear that we are only six months in where are we going to wind up?” he said.
