Local Woman Wins Anti-Racism Award

A Vernon woman is one of five British Columbians honoured for efforts to end acts of racism and promote cultural inclusion.

Dalvir Nahal — who is a Vernon city councillor — has received a Multiculturalism and Anti Racism award from the BC government.

Nahal (pictured) is the founder of the Bollywood Bang fundraising event, and is dedicated to increasing awareness of Sikh culture and history by breaking down cultural barriers.

The ceremony took place on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The other recipients are Nada El Masry of New Westminster, manager at RADIUS SFU at Simon Fraser University; Annie Ohana of Surrey, founder of a youth social justice leadership program; the Powell River Academy of Music; and Spice Radio for organizing the annual campaign Raise Your Hands Against Racism.

Each award recipient received a trophy presented by Premier John Horgan.

“Diverse and inclusive communities are strong communities,” said Horgan. “Congratulations to these remarkable individuals and organizations, who are working to end racism and discrimination, and make sure every person feels welcome to participate in B.C.’s economy, culture and society. Their actions are helping build a better B.C. for us all.”
