Charging Battery May Have Sparked Blaze

Four residents at a home in Coldstream are being looked after by the emergency social services program after an accidental fire.

It broke out in a garage in the 600 block of Upland Drive Sunday, which Coldstream and Lavington crews were able to keep from spreading to the house.

Fire chief Dave Sturgeon says a motorbike battery that ignited while being charged appears to have been the cause.

“At the time he was charging his motorbike battery for the first time to take it for a ride. And then he went inside, came back out and noticed that the motorbike was on fire. Our preliminary finding is pointing towards the charging, but were trying to make it conclusive,” Sturgeon tells Beach Radio News.

The occupant’s insurance company is also working on the cause.

Sturgeon says the garage was a total loss.

“Lots of recreation vehicles, and they had some stuff they were moving into the house, so personal belongings” adds Sturgeon.

The house sustained smoke damage which is why the four occupants had to be displaced.
