Too Soon To Prepare For Plastic Bag Ban
The Regional District of North Okanagan is encouraging people and businesses to use reuseable bags rather than compostable ones at this point.
RDNO is in the early stages of creating a bylaw to regulate single use plastics, but says it’s too soon for businesses to make changes.
“While we welcome the enthusiasm and passion that people have shown for moving away from single-use plastics, like plastic bags, we have not drafted the bylaw yet. We do not want to see businesses make changes before the regulations are defined only to have to make further changes if the new type of material they chose is also banned when the bylaw is adopted,” says Mike Fox, General Manager of Community Services.
Fox says businesses will be given six months to one year’s notice when the bylaw is put in place, and what materials will be allowed or banned.
