2,2 Quake Rumbles Salmon Arm

2.2 Quake Rumbles Salmon Arm

Mar 3, 2019 | 9:31 AM

A mysterious bang Saturday night rattled some residents of Salmon Arm and rumbling was felt by some North Okanagan residents as far away as Vernon

A confirmation from Earthquake Canada states at 8:39 pm: there was a magnitude 2.2 earthquake occurred in Salmon Arm.

As reported in Global News the effects were felt from Sicamous to Tappen and had residents texting frantically on social media speculating about everything from an explosion to a meteor strike to some other, more ‘fantastic’ theories.

The Shuswap Emergency Program is aware there has been something that has caused widespread reports of homes shaking in the Salmon Arm area.

Global News quotes Taimi Mulder, a seismologist with Earthquakes Canada, saying “earthquakes are rare in the B.C. interior, but they do happen occasionally, and when they do, they are of a similar magnitude”.

Mulder says aftershocks are unlikely with such a small magnitude quake, but adds that “Mother Nature often has her own plans”.

Officials are investigating, but at this time, nothing has been found. There are no reports of damage, and none are expected.
