Keep Clear of Kalavista Lagoon

There’s hope that fencing will keep a couple of pests away from Kalavista Lagoon in Coldstream.

Council has approved installation of a fence to keep out the carp because “they stir up the water and the water quality goes down because of that,” says Mayor Jim Garlick.

Garlick says Coldstream will also supply a letter of support for the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake (SPrKl) which is seeking funding from the Okanagan Basin Water Board for another fence to keep geese off property around the lagoon.

Garlick says the effort is a “first step in hopefully improving the quality of the lagoon and then we’re going to making some decisions going forward to maintain it as an open body of water or a gradual change to a wetlands.”

However he says the district will proceed “slowly and cautiously going forward because we could be in for a lot of money if we’re not careful and we want to make sure it turns out right.”
