One of the Coldest Ever

It’s been a frigid February in the Okanagan.

Environment Canada says the average temperature in Vernon this month is minus 7.9 degrees, more than 6 degrees colder than the normal minus 1.7.

It’s been the sixth coldest February on record, dating back to when weather records started in Vernon (Coldstream Ranch) in 1901.

Kelowna is having its second coldest February on record, trailing only 1936, which was also the chilliest February in Vernon weather history.

Kelowna’s average temp this month is minus 7.4, compared to the average of minus 0.9.

“It’s been this persistent Arctic air that’s been locked in over the Okanagan, really since Feb. 3rd and we haven’t really had any reprieve from it throughout the month,” says Meteorologist Matt MacDonald.

As for how long the cold weather will last, MacDonald doesn’t have great news.

“It looks like its here until the middle of March. This warming trend has been very elusive, and this cold air seems like it’s going to last at least another two weeks, so I’d keep those warm jackets and mitts handy,” he tells Beach Radio News.
