School District 83 phasing in AED’s

It’s a device that could mean life and death to a person in cardiac arrest and now schools in School District 83 will be equipped with them .

The school district says that they will be phasing in AED’s or Automatic External Defibrillators in all schools over the next three years .

The district currently supports only a few prescribed paediactric AED’s for specific students .

The lifesaving qualities of AED’s in schools was recently put in the spotlight after a teen in Oliver B.C  went into cardiac arrest but was saved after teachers used CPR and an AED.

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation AED’s in combination with CPR  have an 75% success rate when applied to patients .

They add that for every minute in delay for defibrillation the survival rate dips by 7%- 10 % and the chance of  survival dips even further after 12 minutes at less than 5 percent.

School District 83 will be spending $60,000 in order to implement the AED’s

The district approved the motion after a recommendation from the health and safety committee.
