Vernon Residents Warm Up The Cold

It was a warm response to a call for blankets and winter apparel from the Upper Room Mission.

Staff at the mission say the community has donated “every imaginable item” to help keep people warm during this frigid weather.

General manager Cera Brown says donations have been coming in non-stop and have also helped other social service groups fill their needs.

She says the items include sleeping bags,mats, winter coats, sweaters, gloves, scarves and toques.

“We knew we lived in a caring community, but we have never seen an outpouring of support like what we are seeing in response to the cold weather,” says Brown.
She says in many cases, donated items were immediately handed out.

“One woman watched as a hand-made quilt made by her grandmother was given directly to a young female guest. Another young man watched as his donated jacket was used to replace the torn and tattered jacket of an older guest.”

The outpouring of support allowed the Mission to reach out to other social service agencies in Vernon to help fill their needs.

In fact, the amount of donations received is so great, the URM contacted social service agencies in other communities to see if donated items could help in their communities.
