Small Surplus Helps School District 83

The North Okanagan Shuswap School District has a little bit of extra money left over due to some good fortune.

Official Trustee Mike Mckay says their surplus last year was 230-thousand dollars.

“That’s not a great deal of money on a 60 million dollar plus budget, but then we had additional funding from increased enrolment,” McKay told Beach Radio News.

McKay says enrolment in District 83 is positive and growing, with 37 students above projections.

“We provided some additional support for counsellors, Indigenous support, some curriculum work, staff capacity building, and a little bit extra money for grounds and snow.

Tuesday was McKay’s last board meeting, and he thanked staff and the community for their efforts after he took over for the fired school board in 2016.

The new board will be sworn in in November.
