Crime Stoppers launches airport campaign to encourage anonymous tips

Kelowna International Airport is becoming a more visible platform for crime prevention, with a new campaign encouraging travellers and residents to report suspicious activity.

Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers and YLW have partnered on the “Crime Doesn’t Fly Here” initiative, which features new signs inside and outside the airport promoting anonymous tips and providing information on how to report crime.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of reporting options and encourage the public to share information that could help police prevent or solve crimes.

“Crime prevention starts with community involvement,” said Bruce Baron, president of Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers.

YLW senior manager of safety and security Neil Drachenberg said the airport supports initiatives that contribute to community safety.

The airport serves more than 2.3 million passengers annually, making it a prominent location to reach residents and visitors with the crime prevention message.

The public is reminded to call 911 to report emergencies or crimes in progress. Non-emergency criminal incidents can be reported to Kelowna RCMP, while Crime Stoppers offers an anonymous option for people with information about non-emergency incidents.

Suspicious activity that could affect airport safety can also be reported to airport security personnel.

Anonymous tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000 if their information leads to an arrest.
