Federal government announces up to $22.4M for Kelowna airport infrastructure

The federal government is putting up to $22.4 million toward infrastructure at Kelowna International Airport, with the goal of preparing additional airport land for development.

Kelowna M-P Stephen Fuhr announced the funding Monday through the Direct Delivery stream of the federal Build Communities Strong Fund.

The project will bring essential utility services to more than 165 acres of airport employment and industrial property on YLW’s East Lands. The initial work is expected to make about 90 acres ready for development.

Planned infrastructure includes water and sewer systems, stormwater management, electrical service and communications connections.

The city says the additional servicing will remove a barrier to developing the airport lands and could accommodate businesses in sectors including aerospace, aviation, logistics, advanced manufacturing, technology and training.

Fuhr says the investment is intended to help attract new companies and private investment while expanding employment opportunities in the region.

YLW chief executive officer Sam Samaddar says the project will also strengthen the airport’s role in supporting trade, investment and the growth of the aerospace sector.

The federal funding comes through the Build Communities Strong Fund, a $51-billion national infrastructure program announced by Ottawa.

The project remains subject to a contribution agreement between the federal government and the recipient, as well as applicable requirements involving Indigenous consultation and environmental assessments.
