Cautious reminder in West Kelowna

Brolund calls for FireSmart vigilance

West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund is urging residents to stay FireSmart as crews continue helping other communities while remaining ready at home.

Brolund says residents, businesses and visitors should clear wildfire hazards around their properties, including wood piles, cedar hedges and dry debris.

“Let’s do all we can to help avoid another wildfire within our city,” Brolund said.

He also warns that less obvious items, such as straw mats, can pose a risk from flying embers.

“Taking FireSmart actions are proven to help a home’s wildfire survivability,” Brolund said.

Campfires are banned, and residents are being reminded not to smoke in parks, travel into the backcountry or use spark-producing equipment near dry vegetation.
