Automatic Aid Program

Vernon and Coldstream launch new pilot to better respond to significant fires

Vernon and Coldstream have developed a new pilot program to better respond to significant fire incidents.

The two-year Automatic Aid program will, unlike traditional agreements, see neighbouring resources dispatched immediately when qualifying incidents are reported.

The project will see Coldstream fire crews deployed for any general alarm fires in Vernon, while firefighters from Vernon will be sent out for any structure or working fires in Coldstream.

The program was developed with the goal of enhancing emergency response capabilities and improving public and firefighter safety through a better and faster response during significant fires.

“Vernon and Coldstream have a strong history of working together, and this pilot is another opportunity to build on that relationship and support one another when it matters most,” Vernon Mayor, Victor Cumming, said.

“By having additional resources respond sooner, our firefighters can work together more promptly and effectively. This is about making the best use of our resources, supporting our neighbouring community and helping keep people safe in Vernon and in Coldstream.”

This pilot will be run over a two-year period, and each activation of the agreement will be reviewed to evaluate response effectiveness, firefighter and public safety, operational coordination, resource availability, response time, costs and overall incident outcomes. Findings from those reviews will be presented publicly to the councils in both municipalities.

“This pilot is a great example of how we can work together to support both communities,” Coldstream Mayor Ruth Hoyte added.

“Having additional firefighters and equipment respond sooner when they are needed will provide another layer of support for our residents and our fire department. I appreciate the work that has gone into developing this pilot and look forward to seeing the positive impact it has for Coldstream and Vernon.”

Under the program, residents will still receive fire protection from their local fire department, and there will be no changes to how 911 calls are managed or dispatched.
