Canadian venues are part of the trend, with a beer at Toronto Stadium costing $24.25 and a brisket sandwich, chips and a bottle of pop selling for nearly $40, while Vancouver offers local specialties such as short rib poutine and maple bacon smokies. Concession costs vary widely by venue, however, with Atlanta standing out for keeping prices low by offering US$3 pizza slices, US$5 cheeseburgers and beers starting at US$8.

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic at his West Block office on Parliament Hill, and they exchanged soccer jerseys. Carney presented Plenkovic with a black Canada jersey that appeared to have signatures. Plenkovic then gave Carney a Croatia jersey that had Carney’s surname on the back, which Plenkovic said was signed by players on that nation’s team two weeks ago. Carney referred to the game as football. Croatia plays Panama on Tuesday in Toronto.

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the rest of the World Cup and is expected to be sidelined for several months with a left ankle injury. The Borussia Dortmund centre back injured the medial ligament in his ankle during Germany’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday. Germany has already secured first place in Group E.

French sports media outlet L’Équipe has apologized to Belgium winger Jeremy Doku and distanced itself from comments made by presenter France Pierron about the player’s desire to attend the birth of his first child. Pierron criticized Doku on air after he said he may leave the World Cup if his wife goes into labour. Pierron described childbirth as “a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the dad is useless” when taking part in the television show “L’Équipe de Choc” on Friday. England forward Ollie Watkins defended Doku, saying the birth of a first child is a blessing and a personal matter.
