A drug alert has been issued for a substance found being circulated in Kelowna.

Interior Health said a tablet being sold as Oxycodone or Percocet was found to actually contain Medetomidine, which is a very strong tranquilizer.

Medetomidine poses a high risk of overdose and does not respond to Naloxone. It can also cause low heart rate and blood pressure; dizziness; immobilization; confusion; nausea; amnesia; sleepiness; and nodding off for long periods of time.

“Using illicit tablets is not recommended due to heightened risk of overdose,” the health authority stated.

“Be aware of risk of fakes if not purchasing from a pharmacy.”

People were advised to have their drugs checked; to use them at an Overdose Prevention Site; to not mix with other substances including alcohol; and to start out with a small amount and space out doses. IH also suggested people get the LifeGuard App, and carry and know how to use Naloxone.
