Utility projects begin this week

Two major infrastructure projects in Vernon are ready to begin.

On Thursday, May 21, the city will be doing emergency sanitary repairs on 32nd Avenue.

The work will take place near the intersection with 27th Street, and will require the main road to be reduced to single-lane traffic in both directions, while 32nd Ave. will be closed between 25th and 28th Streets. The city said construction would begin at 6:30 a.m. and be completed by 6 p.m. the same day, barring any unforeseen complications.

On Sunday, May 24, crews will begin a major utility renewal project along 31st St.

The work between 31st and 33rd Avenues will include upgrading the storm and sanitary infrastructure, followed by road resurfacing work.

Construction will go from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with crews moving block to block doing this work, which was expected to be completed by June 12, barring any delays.

The city said the intersection at 31st St. and 32nd Ave. would remain open when possible, though it will have to close between June 1 and 3.

Access to nearby businesses and residences would be maintained during the project, though the city warned the work could cause some traffic delays.

“These projects are an important investment in maintaining reliable infrastructure and improving road conditions for the community,” the city said in a release.

“Please obey all traffic control signage and reduce speed when travelling through work zones to help keep crews and the public safe.”
