Vernon looking at outside funding to bolster its Emergency Operations Centre
The City of Vernon is looking for some outside funding to enhance its emergency support capability.
At the regular meeting Monday, De. 15, Vernon City Council was asked to authorized staff to apply for a grant through the Union of B.C. Municipalities’s Community Emergency Preparedness Fund – Emergency Operations Centres Equipment and Training 2026 Program.
The city would ask for a grant of up to $30,000 which, if the application is successful, would be used to purchase new equipment and train volunteers at the local Emergency Operations Centre. It was not specified how many volunteers required training or what new equipment needed to be purchased, though a staff report said the city would not pursue the additional equipment or training should the grant application be unsuccessful.
The ask for the funds comes following the city submitting an application to UBCM for a grant to bolster its Emergency Support Services in November. As these funds come from the same agency, council asked staff to try to bring them both forward at the same time the next time the application periods open.
