Police urge caution with online holiday shopping

Nov 25, 2025 | 2:37 PM

Local Mounties are asking people to be safe and secure when shopping for holiday gifts online.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP say shopping online can take some pressure off the holidays, but it also opens people up to being targeted by bad actors.

The local police force say people should be cautious when shopping online and take extra precautions to shop smart and stay secure.

  • Stick to legitimate retailers: only buy from trusted, well-known sellers
  • Check for security: look for “https” and the padlock symbol in the browser
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi: unsecured networks make it easier for hackers
  • Too good to be true? It likely is: be cautious of unrealistically low prices
  • Do your homework: research sellers and read customer reviews
  • Pay safely: use credit cards or reputable, secure payment platforms

“Shopping online is quick and convenient, but it’s important to stay alert and safeguard your personal and financial details,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“Fraudsters look for opportunities during this busy season so keep your guard up and don’t give them one. Here are some key tips to help you shop with more confidence and peace of mind.”

The RCMP also advised people keep an eye on their bank accounts and their credit card statements and to immediately report any unauthorized or suspicious activity to their financial institution.

People who do fall victim of scams and lose money or have their personal information compromised should file a report with the police. Anyone who suspects a spam attempt should also report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or at 1-888-495-8501.
