Vernon Council reviewing major planning documents Monday, OCP Public Hearing to follow

Nov 22, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Vernon City Council will be considering three major planning initiatives Monday.

Local leaders will be presented with the revised Official Community Plan, Transportation Plan, and 2026 Infrastructure Program at the Committee of the Whole and regular council meetings on Nov. 24.

The Official Community Plan (OCP) is a long-term planning strategy aimed at managing the community’s growth, as Vernon is expected to see its population increase by roughly 20,000 people over the next two decades. The plan looks at the needs the community faces to meet that growth such as in housing, infrastructure, transportation and parks and public spaces.

The Transportation Plan includes strategies to improve safety, mobility, and connectivity across the city. It also outlines what investments should be considered in terms of roads, transit, cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian routes.

The Infrastructure Program outlines 24 capital projects for the coming year, which were valued at over $26-million. Those were mainly focused on renewing critical infrastructure and supporting growth, with notable projects including the 43rd avenue corridor improvements, upgrades to the recreation complex and Kal Tire Place, and replacing aged infrastructure for the sanitary collection and treatment centres.

Council will receive these documents for discussion at Monday’s meetings, which will be followed by an OCP Public Hearing at 5:30 p.m. and the city asked anyone interested in providing their insight or ideas relating to the major planning document to attend.

The city also has an online survey regarding the proposed financial plan that people can fill out before it closes at noon Monday.
