Greater Vernon saw housing construction slow on an annual basis last month.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were 17 housing projects started locally in October.

That was down from the 23 starts recorded in the same month the year before, though was up from the nine housing projects started in September.

CMHC said the projects started locally in October involved eight row houses, four semi-detached, three single homes, and two apartments.

To date, a total of 199 housing projects had been started in Greater Vernon, which was up from the same period of 2024 when there were a total of 160 starts.

CMHC also provided some new data on housing construction and completion in its October report.

The agency said Greater Vernon had a total of 88 housing project completions in October. Those involved 84 apartment and four semi-detached projects.

As of the end of the most recent reporting month, there were 338 housing projects under construction. Those included 148 row houses, 91 apartments, 59 single houses and 40 semi-detached homes.

Elsewhere in the region, CMHC recorded Kelowna saw 182 housing projects started in October, which it said was up on an annual basis.

However, the Central Okanagan city had only seen 2,314 new housing starts between January 1 and October 31, which CMHC said was down when compared to the same period in 2024.

The agency noted there were 337 housing projects completed in Kelowna this past October, and that 6,197 projects were still under construction as of the end of the month.

The province and the country also saw housing construction slow down in October.

CMHC said B.C. recorded 2,696 housing starts in October, down from 3,447 the year before. Canada as a whole also recorded 19,174 new projects, down from 19,763 starts in October of 2024.

As of the end of the latest reporting month, B.C. a total of 34,457 housing projects had been started in B.C. in 2025, compared to 35,700 during the same period the year before. Comparatively, Canada had recorded a rolling total of 197,209 starts, up from 188,205 recorded in the same 10-month period in 2024.
