Local agency asks public to help spread holiday cheer to seniors

NexusBC Community Resource Centre is bringing its campaign to spread holiday cheer to local seniors in a little early this year.

The agency launched its annual Making Spirits Bright campaign to encourage individuals, families, schools, businesses and others to make a difference in supporting local seniors by filling a Care Box.

“For seniors who live alone, face financial challenges, and may not have family nearby, the holidays can be a very difficult time,” Lee Brinkman of NexusBC stated.

“We want every senior to know that they are not alone this Christmas.”

The Care Boxes can be filled with items a senior would enjoy, with NexusBC noting grocery gift cards are welcome additions due to the rising cost of food. People who fill the boxes were also asked to include personalized cards to help make seniors feel the holiday cheer over the season.

“Getting kids involved is a wonderful way to teach empathy and compassion,” Brinkman added.

“Helping to assemble a Care Box gives them a chance to make someone’s holiday brighter while learning the value of giving.”

NexusBC distributed 350 Care Boxes to local seniors in 2024, and hoped to see the contributions increase this year.
