People in need of charging their electric vehicles have some innovative chargers to access in the North Okanagan.

B.C. Hydro said it’s opened its first-ever, portable, skid-mounted fast charging station in Lumby.

The station is self-contained and built on a metal frame so it can be deployed when needed with minimal civil construction.

“All cabling is completed and CSA-approved at the factory, and power is delivered via overhead service from a nearby transformer pole – eliminating the need for underground excavation,” B.C. Hydro said in a release.

“This design is ideal for sites with complex permitting, northern regions with short construction windows due to winter weather conditions, or temporary installations for events and emergencies.”

The portable EV charging station was installed in the parking lot at the Lumby Curling Rink, and was fully operational within days of installation.

It features one 180-kilowatt charger. An average EV can charge enough power within 10 minutes to be able to cover about 180 kilometres. A 100-kilowatt charger is also available at the site, and there is also the option for dual charging or power sharing.

The new station in Lumby brings the province’s fast charging network up to 729 ports at 163 sites across B.C.
